The Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites is a historic Halifax landmark offering a blend of classic charm and updated amenities. Recent reviews highlight exceptional service and a convenient location, particularly near the Public Gardens and downtown nightlife. However, some guests have expressed concerns regarding aging infrastructure and inconsistent room quality.
We stayed a week at this hotel for our Union Convention after it was just renovated and every aspect of this beautiful hotel was amazing. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and very accessible. The staff were friendly, helpful and very accommodating with all aspects of our convention. The food was delicious and the banquet halls were large and spacious for all our events. There were many local bars and restaurants along spring garden and right across the street are the public gardens - a National historic site! This hotel is a true historic icon in Halifax!
I really wanted to enjoy this stay because having grown up in Halifax, I think fondly of The Lord Nelson. Unfortunately there’s a lot to be dismayed by. I can only assume that the owners are allowing the hotel to fall into disrepair to get permission to knock it down or turn it into condos. The rooms are more than tired- they are breaking down, at least the three I saw on floor 9. The bathroom ventilation of the first room I checked into sounded like being in a propeller aircraft so I asked for a change. Later in the evening I had the misfortune to look behind my bed in search of a bedside plug (no luck) and it was filthy. Ditto for the baseboard and heater. Sheets, towels etc all good, and appreciated the Nespresso machine. Lots of wall cracks, very worn bathroom, and a fair number of things that would take just a little attention to put to rights, but are instead being left to worsen. Staff were uniformly nice but we were upset by having arranged a paid-for late check out for 4pm for one of our rooms and being told at noon that we needed to vacate at 3pm. I’m just glad we were on the premises and could adjust for that. In no way shape or form could the hotel be busy enough to not have other rooms available so I really don’t know what this was all about. There was also a real lack of attention before I arrived and no one addressed my request for a credit card authorisation form. This hotel should be loved and cared for so I’m sad to see how it’s being treated by the current management company. And as a frequent visitor to Halifax I’m sorry to say I won’t ever stay here again unless a major refit is done.
This hotel was first class from arrival to departure. The room was spacious and well appointed. The staff were super friendly. They even surprised us with a box of chocolates for our anniversary.
I am visiting The Lord Nelson in Halifax for unfortunate reasons, my mom is in a hospital nearby. My greeting walking in however was amazing! The three staff that rushed to help me were incredibly charming & professional. I arrived after an overnight flight with one of my dogs and didn’t sleep a wink but these three made me feel like I’m here on a lovely vacation. The early check in really made my day & I’m so grateful they helped with my bags as I brought many. I should have grabbed their names but I’m quite exhausted. They provided a cute little bag with a dog toy, food and clean up bag for outdoor doggy bathroom visits. Although I have all this with me, that was a very sweet & thoughtful touch. The pet rate is very fair and you don’t need to pay for it nightly. Parking was SO easy, it’s heated & underground. Great location - rooms are super clean, the bed and pillows are SO comfy. Love the nespresso machine and products in the washroom. They have a 24 hour gym, laundry service, access to the YMCA and 20% off the spa. The restaurant menu looks delicious - can’t wait to try that and relieved they have room service! I think I’ll need it.
We stayed in a Deluxe One Bedroom Suite on the 7th floor and it was absolutely beautiful and cozy. The suite had a Nespresso machine, complimentary water, and a very comfortable king bed. The staff were all incredibly friendly and welcoming. During the parade, the hotel offered hot chocolate and candy canes, which was such a thoughtful touch. We also loved the chocolates at the front desk! The only downside was that someone on our floor was blasting music for hours late at night. I called the front desk around midnight, and although they said they would send security, the noise continued for a long time, making it really hard to sleep. I ended up needing a nap when I got home. We stayed here two years ago and didn’t have this issue, so it was bit disappointing. Aside from the noise situation, everything else was great. We really enjoyed our stay overall and still appreciate the hotel’s charm and amazing staff. They did apologize to me ar check out but. Parking tip: A full day at the mall level was cheaper at $20 compared to their $28
I think this hotel was likely quite stellar back in the day, but now it's far from perfect. The good: - The service. It's incredible. Every single staff member I interacted with was great and very helpful! - The location. You couldn't ask for a better location in Halifax. It's close to almost everything! - Secure parking. You have to pay to park, but it's underground and it's secure! - The smell. Yes, the smell! If you've ever been to Disney or any Disney hotel, it smells like this place, especially in the lobby and hallways. - It's clean. The lobby, hallways and room were all very clean. The bad: - The rooms (at least parts). There are areas that are quite outdated and clearly need at least some maintenance. The shower head base was falling out of the wall, there is absolutely zero sound-proofing consideration on any of the doors (bathroom or main), the curtains barely worked. - The price. A regular night was close to $500. I had a discount, but even with the discount it came to a similar price as every other major hotel in Halifax. I would never, ever, pay $500 to stay a night here. It's not a bad hotel, but it certainly isn't a $500 per night hotel, respectfully. Even though there are many positive things about this hotel, I almost certainly would not return just based on price. I think there are many more modern options for a better price.
So many things went right with my stay at the hotel from Sept 16 to 19th. Check in was very positive. A sweet, smart an chatty reception agent. She gave me a beautiful room on the 9th floor. She really shined by sending me a handwritten note in my room a couple days later welcoming me to Halifax. In the note was reference to why I was in town, and wishing me the best. I was very touched and still have the note in my briefcase. My room was excellent. Nice to open the fridge and see all I needed for coffee waiting inside. Comfortable couches and bed. Shower was excellent, lots of pressure and roomy. Nice quality amenities. Very quiet as well. Easy parking, but if I had a few bags, I would drop them in front of the hotel with the bell man and then park. Humping a few bags in an unfamiliar parking garage, and then the trek to the actual hotel could start you off on the wrong foot. The hotel is right across the street from the Public Gardens. A great place to take your morning coffee. The real kicker about my stay was that I forgot about the three shirts I had in the wardrobe. I called and the hotel sent me my shirts by Canada Post with only the postal charge. Legendary service. Can't use names, but the person I spoke to about my shirts was as nice and sweet and the front desk person. The location is great for nightlife as well. Only a ten minute walk to be in the heart of the Halifax restaurant/bar scene, but nice and quiet by the hotel. Again, many thanks to the hotel staff for not only a great stay, but for sending me my shirts. Highly recommend.
We have visited several hotels in Halifax area, and selected the Lord Nelson for our event. This is a very nicely renovated hotel with great event space and excellent service. Hotels food is usually 5 out of 10, but the Lord Nelson gets 10 out of 10 from our international attendees and that means a lot. Meals were healthy, delicious, and artfully decorated. The event manager, Jahnia, was above and beyond helpful, ensuring a smooth event operation, setup, and addressed all our requests in a timely fashion. The crew on the ground make the experience a great one and makes us come back. Shout out to Amir at the catering service with being on top of everything and helping with all our needs. We had a great experience and happy with this choice.
