The Moxy Halifax Downtown Hotel presents a unique, modern aesthetic and social environment, appealing to travelers seeking a trendy and Instagrammable stay. However, recent reviews highlight inconsistencies in room quality, service, and functionality, with issues ranging from broken amenities to lackluster service and a surprisingly uncomfortable room experience.
A great designer on a TEMU shopping spree made this hotel look amazing with the cheapest quality build. Knob in shower fell off, bed reading lamp was broken, cloth pull on drawer under bed had let go on one side, went to open the fridge and handle came off in hand, terrible draft coming through window, cool lantern handle required snapping together. We were in a bunk room which is a very cool option but needs a fan in the room. The people in the top bunks were too warm. The people in the bottom bunks were uncomfortably cold. The lobby vibe was excellent. The coffee was ok, the water for the tea was lukewarm warm. The staff were lovely but every staff member that I spoke with were struggling with the computer system. We had to check in twice because they gave our party a room with one bed when we had reserved a room with two bunk beds. I reported these issues when checking out. Hope they have a maintenance person visit the room. Every time we left the parking lot the door didn’t work and someone had to get out to push the button by the door
This hotel was my favourite for a while. It’s highly recommended. The location is just a five-minute walk from the US consulate, making it perfect for any visa interviews. A pleasant surprise was the water fountains on each floor. The hotel also gave us a complimentary drinks coupon, which made our stay even better. They also have a great gym. I’m definitely coming back to stay here.
This is quite an interesting hotel. Very modern and trendy. You check in at the bar and they give you a poker chip for a complimentary drink which is a nice touch. The rooms are possibly the smallest hotel rooms I've ever seen and I stay in hotels weekly. They are however very very modern, very very clean, and very very nice. The bathrooms are extremely nice. Despite the tiny room I really enjoyed my 2 nights at the Moxy Halifax Downtown Hotel and definitely recommend it. The bar area is also very modern and trendy, very cool spot. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.
"It's not for everyone" shouldn't be something used to describe anything to do with hospitality, but here we are... If you enjoy dorm rooms and social media-ready spaces, you'll probably find yourself quite at home here. Otherwise, you may just feel out of touch, or cast aside. The staff are very nice and welcoming, as one would expect from Marriott, you even get a free drink - but that's about where the actual hospitality ends. From the front desk/bar onwards it's all about the modern outside-the-box instagram backdrop aesthetic and not about you. The rooms throw convention (and comfort) out the large picture window. The sliding, un-lockable bathroom doors reveal what your family ate last night. The only place to sit is a wooden folding chair hung from the wall (which may be appealing to some). In winter, the cold vinyl floors and colder bedding mirror the cold concrete ceiling. The (double sold as queen) beds have been turned sideways and installed head to head so that someone gets to sleep against the wall and you all get to feel like you're at summer camp. Boring old pillows are replaced by large cushions which you have to prop in the awkward gap against the wall so you can sit and watch the TV. A wall mounted box unfolds to reveal a slanty desk that you could only use to rest a pizza. Nothing about the room seems to be intentionally designed to improve your experience - everything is a challenge to the horrors of normalcy. Even the lack of closet shows its disdain for the old ways. Boomers certainly needn't darken these slogan-covered doors. It's a bit odd that this is all coming from a company with a century of hospitality experience behind it. While I might not want to stay in a 1927 hotel, I would still like to benefit from the lessons learned over time - which all seem to have been flushed down the sink here - that is if the sink didn't have a flat bottom and you could actually flush things down it.
Thank you to the Moxy staff for making this staycation a very special one. The hotel has a central Europe vibe very modern. Smaller rooms that can accommodate families. The common areas really add alot to this hotel. They have many games to play. Life size connect 4, jenga, chess and a cool room hidden behind a book shelf.Family friendly . Healther was so amazing. She and the other front staff were so nice and acommodating. The wait staff were amazing too. This morning at breakfast, i dropped my knife and before I even looked up the waiter had a new one on my table. I recommend this hotel if you are looking for a modern place to enjoy time with family and friends. So much to do we stayed in the hotel for the entire night. Didn't even have to leave. Thank you MOXY, our engagement staycation was one that we will not forget due to the amazing staff.
Our stay at the Moxy Marriott Downtown Halifax location was extremely disappointing and we will not return to this Hotel. We are Marriott BonVoy members and have stayed at numerous Marriott Hotels throughout Canada and the United States. We have always been satisfied with each of the Hotels until our recent stay at the Moxy Marriott Halifax Downtown. The main reasons are: - During our 5 day/4night stay no room servicing ever happened (ie changing bedding and towels) despite being advised by the “Bar Reception” that room servicing will occur every other day. - The bathroom in our room (#416) had an extremely strong “musty” smell. The smell was of a severity that made me feel there may be mold. - The laminate floor was coming up in several spots so dangerous for walking about in bare feet. - There were no plugs for technology devices despite being a “new” Hotel. - Some of the pegs for hanging clothes on were behind the large television. We had read about the concept of this NEW Hotel and were willing to experience the modern “minimalist but functional” premises as promoted. In reality we paid rates similar to other hotels for far less service and comfort.
First time staying at this budget Marriott brand and it makes a lot of sense, but misses the mark in many ways. The lobby is the best room in the hotel, with a bustling bar, games, food and TVs and it's always busy. The staff are all around great. It's clearly where they want you to hang out, eat and drink and spend money. The common spaces are very style over substance, but they're obviously going hard for the influencer market and that's not me. The 'influencer kitsch' everywhere makes my skin crawl, but there at least is a nice innovation in the floor pantry that has extra towels and free toiletries...though it's lots of stuff that would just normally be in a hotel room. Contrast that to the rooms which aren't actually very small, but are spartan like a dorm room and not comfortable to hang out in. The bed and bedding isn't comfy, the only chair is a stiff, hard backed folding chair, and that's it. The charging options suck, the Chromecast doesn't work, the lighting makes very little sense, and absolutely nobody wants a non-sealing barn door to the bathroom. The toilet in my room wasn't firmly attached, the blinds bunched if you tried to lower them, and there were stains and scuffs all over the place, from the walls to the tiles to the cheap anodized sink. University dorm vibes all around. The ultimate example is the faux rotary phone with buttons instead of dial holes - nobody designing this place has thought about what is useful, it's all artificial. Contrast with an Alt Hotel where the rooms are much smaller but super functional, extremely comfortable and the tech works well - the Moxy feels like Marriott struggling to be cool and just being cringe.
This hotel is NOT for everyone, as you can read in the other reviews. If you're looking for a fancy room with tons of furniture then it's not for you. Our room was very simple and clean. The bed was comfortable, bathroom had lots of room. The tiny retro fridge was great for our leftover pizza for our breakfast the next day. It's everything you need in a hotel room, it is not a suite. We liked the little supplies cubby on the floor, we were able to grab an extra pillow and a towel when we needed it. We stayed here on vacation, so we were not in the room for more than sleeping and showering. The lobby/bar/reception is funky and a cool place to hang out. It was bit cool to sit outside when we were there, but they had a couple nice patio areas to hang out. I liked the gym, had plenty of cardio and free weights and a cable machine, made it easy to get in a workout while I was there. The staff is great! The food was just okay, you're better off venturing out for a meal. I took away a star for location, because it is at the top of a hill so if you're heading down to the waterfront, then you're going to have to climb back up that hill! We did take a walk north of the hotel, don't advise that area.
