The HI Halifax Heritage House offers a convenient and comfortable stay in downtown Halifax, praised for its cleanliness, excellent location, and modern amenities like a kitchenette and laundry facilities. While some guests appreciate the friendly staff, others have noted minor issues with reception and potential improvements regarding privacy and bathroom facilities.

The room was exceptionally clean and surprisingly more comfortable and convenient than it appeared in the photos. The location is another major plus—right in the heart of downtown, making it easy to walk to many nearby attractions. The kitchenette was also spotless and well?maintained, which made our stay even more convenient. If there’s one thing that could be improved, it would be the reception experience. The receptionist wasn’t as friendly or welcoming as we had hoped, though everything was still handled properly, so it wasn’t a major issue—just something that could make the stay feel even better. One thing to note: the Google Maps pin leads you toward a back alley, which can be a bit confusing at first. The actual entrance is directly on the main street, and once you know that, it’s fairly easy to find. Overall, the cleanliness, comfort, and excellent location made this a great place to stay, with just a small area for improvement in terms of hospitality.

I've stayed at the 2 hostels I know about in Halifax and this is the superior of the two. Let's start with the good! - Location is AMAZING. You are right near everything, cut pub across the street, inexpensive restaurants and a grocery store nearby. Wonderful! - The beds were super comfy and there were ear plugs everywhere available for free. There were not one, but two very loud snorers in my room and I simply would not have made it through the night without these earplugs. - The staff were really nice. They felt genuine and kind. - On weekends, local parking is free and on weekdays you can pay through a handy dandy app on your phone, so it is less likely you'll end up with a hefty towing charge or parking ticket. - Every single person I met while I was staying there was truly lovely. The less good? - I really dislike hostels that don't have privacy curtains. It would be so easy to have these installed and they don't. - They don't use duvet covers or wash the blankets betweeen guests. Gross. I tried not to use the blanket at all, but it was a bit cold for that. I would really suggest they invest in duvet covers. - The showers are TINY. I mean, your clothes, your towel - everything you want to keep dry is going to at least get damp if not worse. More options for hanging things in the shower stalls would be amazing. - The coffee is not replenished in the morning and it's not super clear how to refill the carafe on your own. If you say you make coffee until noon, then do that please! - Check in isn't until 4pm, which feels a bit late in the day. What in the world are you doing for 5 hours (check out is at 11am) to prepare a few beds for new guests? - The lockers do not come with a locking device. Go to dollarama and get one for just $2.50 - but really, it would be nice if they offered them for sale at that price right on site. Overall though, I am very likely to stay there again. It's affordable and gets the job done. TOP TIP: Go eat at the Iranian place (Shiraz) just one block away. Delicious!

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room and bathroom were clean, and at night it was really quiet and peaceful. In addition, they have great facilities such as laundry and lounge area. I really enjoyed it!

Staff were friendly, but couldn’t do early check-in despite traveling in winter (the place was empty). No breakfast, I’d opt for a hotel next time since comparable price to a private room. Stayed in a room with ensuite on the ground floor, and thankfully staff were able to move us to 3rd floor the second night - the heater rads need the window to stay opened, otherwise it’s too hot, and we felt unsafe sleeping at ground floor with folks walking around at night outside. Window was unlocked when we arrived. The common room was also very warm. Location is great - near Pier 21 and short walk to the boardwalk.

So, i don’t know about the property resources; but i booked the room for 2 days; going for US appointment; but due to bad weather and delayed flights; i got halifax and only able to attend US appointment directly but don’t use the room; then i went to back and forth messages with hotel staff and manager; but they deduct no show fees and after requesting for Goodwill refunds they don’t gave it. So my experience was bad; because as we all know weather is unpredictable and i can’t do anything at that time; and they refuse to pay anything.

Was pleasantly surprised with this hostel! Location is great and close to the waterfront. Staff were accommodating, rooms and bathrooms were very clean, and common areas were larger than expected. Beds and lockers are pretty standard, but mattresses were comfortable and I had no safety concerns staying here as a woman.

The perfect Hostel. Within walking distance to all pubs and attractions downtown. This place is super clean. The staff regularly go in to clean the bathrooms. The rooms and common spaces are clean aswell. I highly recommend. I've been having a great time here.

I stayed in a women's-only dorm here and had a good experience! First off, the location was great. I was able to get to most places I wanted by walking. The place feels secure with key access to the building, floors and rooms. Quick heads up that womens dorms are on the 3rd floor with stairs only access, so getting my bag up was an experience to say the least! This hostel has clearly been updated recently and everything looks very bright and new. The rooms and bathrooms were clean. It seemed like bathrooms were cleaned once daily, as well as the rooms. The common areas were clean and well-maintained as well. The kitchen is very spacious. The common room felt a bit hot and stuffy so I didn't spend time there. Where things could be improved: it seems as though the quiet hours were not enforced. There was one night where there was a group on the rooftop deck until probably 2am. I was also not able to get a towel as they had not laundered any in time. As well, the fridge was starting to smell from guests that had checked out and left their food. Should be gone through more frequently. Vibe wise, it's a pretty quiet hostel. There were very limited social events while I was there. It would have been nice to have a few more opportunities to meet fellow travellers, but was a nice and relaxing experience staying there. Overall I would recommend staying here for your next visit to Halifax!

Had a great time here! The space is super clean and there is even a nice rooftop area. Rooms are big enough and have lockers to safely store your stuff. Unfortunately no curtains on the bunks, that would’ve provided a little more privacy. The shared kitchen is big enough and offers everything that you need. Staff is beyond friendly and always trying to accommodate to your wishes. Would stay here again for sure!
