The Fourth Lock B&B receives mixed reviews, with strong positive feedback on its restaurant and charming atmosphere, particularly highlighting its owner and cozy vibe. However, recent guests have reported issues with noise levels, parking difficulties, and inconsistencies in food quality, as well as concerns about the restaurant's ambiance during peak times.
We stayed here in the “William” room on the last night of our Maritime trip and had dinner at the restaurant. My seafood linguine marinara was the best meal I had on the whole trip. The server was friendly and efficient. The view of the river from our shared balcony was spectacular! The common room was cozy. Sadly our room was not very senior-friendly. The bed was low to the ground and not firm enough. Sound carried from the restaurant below us and from the guests above us who partied till late and we had an early flight and a long way home back to BC. So not very restful. The to-go breakfast featured apples, oranges, bars, Rice Krispie squares and chocolate chip muffins. Maybe offer more healthy options? Overall I did appreciate the stay because of the dinner, the view and the proximity to the airport. I recommend this place for young couples.
????? My stay at The Fourth Lock was nothing short of exceptional. The property itself is beautiful, blending historic charm with modern comfort in a way that feels both elegant and welcoming. My room was spotless, cozy, and thoughtfully designed, making it easy to relax from the moment I arrived. The restaurant and bar were outstanding, with delicious food, a wonderful atmosphere, and views that perfectly complement the rich history of the old Shubenacadie Canal. Every detail of the experience reflects the care and pride that has gone into creating this special place. What truly sets The Fourth Lock apart, however, is the owner. He is the heart and soul of the establishment. Despite working tirelessly behind the scenes and seemingly being everywhere at once, he still takes the time to personally engage with guests, share stories, and ensure everyone feels welcome. His energy, dedication, and genuine hospitality create an atmosphere that cannot be manufactured. It’s rare to meet someone who works so hard while making every guest feel like a valued friend. Judging by the smiles and conversations throughout the property, it’s clear that everyone adores him. If you’re looking for a place with character, comfort, outstanding food, and authentic Maritime hospitality, The Fourth Lock is a true gem. I arrived as a guest and left feeling like part of the family. I can’t wait to return. ????? “Some places are beautiful because of their buildings. The Fourth Lock is beautiful because of its people.” ???
This was our first visit. I called and made a reservation and spoke to someone who I assumed was the manager. He was nice and I told him it was our first visit and that it was mine and my husbands 25th wedding anniversary. I asked for an intimate part of the restaurant as obviously we wanted to feel like it was special. On arriving at the location it wasn’t obvious from the roadside where the restaurant actually was as there was no visible sign, so we ended up driving straight past it and had to turn around. When we drove up to the car park we discovered it jam packed and so had to park at another location which was about a 5 min walk away. Not ideal. Upon entering the restaurant (which again was not obvious where the entrance actually was and someone had to direct us) we were greeted by the person seating us. There are a few different areas of the restaurant both inside and outside, but we were never given a choice and were seated right next to the bar at a small table. Our server came over and took our order. It was only after she left that I discovered that there were in fact specials which we had not been told about. I wasn’t too bothered by this, but it would have been nice to have been given the option. 15 mins into our meal the Trivia night started. So my husband and I were sitting surrounded by everyone talking and shouting out and not even able to hear ourselves and have a conversation. Whilst the food was good, I was very annoyed that when we made our reservation that we weren’t told that Sunday night was trivia night. Our evening was totally ruined, and the lovely romantic meal that I’d envisaged never happened, so much so that we asked for the bill and left. I’ve given it 2 stars as the food was good, but won’t be returning again as the car parking situation (very steep slope to walk up if you can’t park in restaurant car park) and total lack of consideration from the staff that we would obviously not want to be sat surrounded by people playing trivia when we’re having a romantic meal. Ultimately it’s a shame as the food was good, but the fact that I had made a point of telling the owner (or whoever I spoke to) that it was our anniversary and he never said that Sunday was trivia night was unacceptable to me.
This B&B was only 10 minutes from the airport. We got a room with the lake view which was lovely. Rooms are very clean, with comfortable beds. Online check in with key padded front and room doors. Shared living room for coffee or just relaxing. Big bonus- The Fourth Lock Restaurant is just a few steps down the stairs from the B&B. The menu is great and the food is delicious. It’s also a cozy vibe.
We have been going here since we moved to the area close to a decade ago. We used to love it but over the past year and a half it has really gone down hill. We stopped coming every other week and gave it a break a few times but today we decided it was the last time. Not because of the service. The food has been over powered by spice, sauces and garnish that are slapped on and over power the food. I had the nachos tonight which used to be my favorite but I couldn't eat as it was drowned in 2 sauces. That is just one example but we have tried many things and unfortunately the quality is no longer there
What started out as an unfortunate circumstance, ended with a beautiful place to lay my head comfortably. The room was perfect: clean and spacious. The restaurant downstairs was a hidden gem! The food is cooked to perfection. Try the Beef Burgundy, amazing dish! The owner Jaro, is a top notch, stand up guy willing to go the extra mile for his business. Thank you for everything you did, Jaro! -Melissa
Cozy spot and clearly popular with locals. Our daughter was at a volleyball tryout in the area, so we stopped in for supper while we waited. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a friendly, social vibe. We ordered a cider and a beer, which arrived very quickly. For our meals, I had the Japanese curry and my wife chose the pulled pork sandwich. The curry was recommended by our waitress as her favourite and the most popular item on the menu. The food was fine—good but fairly average overall. At $29, the Japanese curry felt a bit overpriced, although the portion size was generous. That said, I’d be open to going back to try other menu items. Service really stood out: attentive, welcoming, and genuinely friendly throughout the meal.
This is a lovely inn with stupendously comfortable and cozy accommodations. Very clean, quiet and well kept, close to the highway. Our room was spacious, appointed with every conceivable amenity featuring a fridge with cold water, which was very welcome. Great vistas of the lake with an inviting common space featuring a coffee maker and couches. Shared balcony provides another vantage of the water where one can partake in a view of the sunset
We have been here 3-4 times for dinner or snacks and it’s very consistent, great food and excellent service. (We have never stayed at the B&B). The nachos worth it alone! Very cozy atmosphere inside and a really nice patio with a view of the lake. Did I mention the nachos?
Stayed in the Fletcher room of the B&B. Very nice atmosphere, modern and clean. Great food and drinks on the restaurant patio. Seafood pasta was amazing and the dessert trio. Will definitely be back if ever back this way from London Ontario. Only negative was the lack of parking.
