The Hollis Halifax - a DoubleTree Suites by Hilton receives mixed reviews, highlighting a prime downtown location and friendly staff, but also significant concerns about cleanliness, maintenance issues, and inconsistent service. Recent feedback suggests improvements in certain areas, particularly with the breakfast service and concierge support, while persistent problems with room conditions and hot tub upkeep remain a recurring issue.
Location to harbour front in Halifax is very convenient but the hotel itself needs a major major update. Room was very cold and no heat in late May. We froze in the room . Curtains are cracked along the edges, the couch is very dirty and every time we sat on it I got an allergic reaction around my eyes and ended up not being able to use this room ( never happened to me before). . I used the spare blanket one nite in the living room but it was not clean and I had a very bad reaction to it and it was then put back into a bag by the cleaning staff in the closet and did not get washed. Tap in the kitchen sink kept falling off, sink drain in bathroom was very slow running, light over the table in living room had one small bulb in it ( rest were burnt out). Lighting throughout very dim. We asked to be moved to no avail. Need I say more. I would not stay here again
Great location. Wonderful staff. The rooms are new and well appointed . However ours looked directly at the neighbours balcony. Unless you want to be on full view you need to close the blinds. We also looked at a construction site that starts going early and is noisy.
Disappointing, wouldn't stay again. 4 night stay in April/May 2026. Room: nowhere to hang coats upon entering, only closet was in the bedroom (either via the living area or bathroom.) nowhere to leave shoes except in front of the kitchenette sink - I assume the layout was designed by an American who isn't used to Canadian winters or our custom to remove shoes. The bathroom had an annoying high pitched squeal whenever the light was on. No towel bar reachable from the shower, which made the floor wet everytime someone had a shower. The shower head was coming out of a gaping hole in the ceiling. The bathroom doors didn't latch, it was as though the frames had shifted since instillation. There was a gap between the curtain and the wall right next to the head of the bed, so that a ray of sun was right in our face at sunrise. The bed was uncomfortable and the covers were thin and didn't come all the way up to our neck, we were cold most nights and only one small scratchy extra blanket in the closet. Only one remote for 2 TVs (living area and bedroom.) TV screen embedded in bathroom mirror didn't seem to work, wouldn't turn on with remote in bathroom. Check-in: staff contradict each other and if you're assured of something in the evening, the morning staff insists it's actually otherwise. Frustrating. Dining: on-site restaurant is fine but open for limited hours. Walkable to other restaurants but most breakfast options are closed on weekends. Great location, but there are many many other hotels nearby. Parking: No on-site parking, so needed to use their valet service (or use a private parking garage a block away with expensive rates and more expensive in-out charges). Valet service wasn't available between 11pm-7am so our car was sometimes unavailable to us. We were originally told at check-in that the car would take 15-20 minutes to be retrieved for us, when in reality it sometimes took up to 45-60 minutes with a lineup in the lobby, and with different staff telling us slightly different versions of how it was supposed to work (eg, one assured us that if we parked on the street after 11pm and gave him our keys that the valet would park it at 7am. When we woke after 8am we were surprised to see our car still there - when we asked about it, the morning staff seemed confused, whispering to each other to try to figure out what happened and where our key was, the valet asking us "so you want your key back?" We started telling him no, it's supposed to be parked, and he condescendingly interrupted and hurried off. One staff had told if we arrive after 11pm and need to park elsewhere (at our own expense) we wouldn't be charged that night for valet service for that night of our stay. Then another staff in the evening said of course we'd still be charged because it was still part of our stay and we should have been there by 11pm. Nothing huge but absolutely expected better given the price point. Won't be returning.
Great for shareholders, bad for guests. Do you miss 2012 wifi prices? Well travel back in time to a place that still has slowed wifi unless you pay, amongst other nickel and dimed amenities. They are unable to get some of the basics right. Like removing cup rings from previous guests from the surface of furniture, or putting matching lightbulbs in fixtures. These are the things even budget brand hotels get right, why not here?
Had a really great experience at Hollis Halifax. Aval at the front desk was genuinely warm and welcoming — exactly what you hope for after a long day of travel. He made check-in feel easy and personal, not just routine. Really appreciated his kindness and professionalism!
Absolutely stay here — no regrets at all! We stayed at The Hollis Halifax Downtown for three nights, and this was easily one of the best hotel experiences we’ve had anywhere in Canada. Location: The hotel is perfectly located, just a two-minute walk from the harbourfront. Parking options are convenient: there’s a covered parking garage about a five-minute walk away, weekend street parking (though it fills up quickly), and a paid open parking lot that was visible right from our room. There are also plenty of excellent restaurant options nearby, all within walking distance. Front Desk & Service: We were warmly welcomed on arrival by a lovely front desk staff member - Wit, who was kind, professional, and happy to accommodate our request for a specific room. Luggage trolleys were available, which was extremely helpful as we were travelling with a child and multiple bags. The staff were also very proactive in assisting with returning the trolleys both during check-in and check-out. Rooms: We stayed in a suite with two queen beds. The room was clean, spacious, and thoughtfully equipped with everything we needed: a large closet, safe, coffee machine, microwave, mini fridge, and comfortable seating. The beds and pillows were excellent, with multiple pillow options (a pleasant change from hotels that only offer very soft pillows). Daily housekeeping was a pleasant surprise—beds were made, and the bathroom was cleaned every day. We were informed that full linen changes happen every four nights, which is reasonable. Heating worked perfectly in our room (808), Wi-Fi was reliable, and all requests made via the app (dental kits, extra sheets, etc.) were handled promptly. Small things were taken care of- like a small night lamp in the washroom. A quick tip: use the Hilton Honors app for any in-room requests. Responses were consistently fast and efficient—this has been our experience across Hilton properties as well. Breakfast: We opted for the breakfast package and were very glad we did. Breakfast was made to order and delicious. The chef was even kind enough to switch the buttermilk pancakes to chocolate chip pancakes on request for my child. The breakfast service at around 7:30 a.m. on January 2nd 2026 was exceptional—the server (I could not get their name unfortunately) was incredibly warm and attentive, truly making us feel welcomed. This was one of the few times we genuinely experienced true hospitality in Canada. Final Verdict: A must-stay hotel in Halifax with excellent rooms, outstanding breakfast, and genuinely friendly staff. Highly recommended. Make use of the Hilton Honors app for quick and seamless service—it makes a big difference.
Great hotel right in downtown Halifax. The pier is literally 5 minutes away, right next to the Evergreen festival if you come in December. The staff is helpful and friendly. I had a mishap as I forgot my work phone in the room upon checkout. Front desk called me but I was already on my way to catch a flight and could not turn back. They graciously offered to ship it to my home address (had to pay for it, of course, but it was my mistake in the first place). The rooms are spacious and very well kept. Comfortable beds, nice view of the docks. If you come to Halifax, this is the pace to stay!
Fantastic location to visit Halifax. Staff was very friendly and helpful at check-in. The hotel restaurant had a great breakfast. Very clean and spacious rooms. We had a studio suite with a king bed. Would definitely stay here again if we come back to Halifax.
We stayed at the Hollis celebrating our anniversary. We had a great time, The room was lovely, spacious and clean. Very comfortable bed and pillows. We had breakfast at the hotel and was pleased to see so many vegetarian choices. But what made this trip extra special, was the excellent customer service we received, especially from Manpreet at the front desk. She went out of her way to make sure our anniversary visit was special. She was knowledgable, helpful and so very pleasant....
Hotel was good. Good location and room was nice. Pool area was good. Decent enough gym. Hot tub was small, something you would find at a friends house, and was un kept and dirty. Ended up with a rash from the dirty water. Didn't realize things until I noticed a rash a few days later. Would expect a Hilton to have better hot tub maintenance.
